Highfield Primary School New Reception Classroom

The new reception Classroom at Highfield Primary School in Southampton is a typical example of the type of small school extension that GJAL are regularly appointed on as Building Services Engineers.  
 
The site was particualrly problematic with the design of the reception classroom wrapping around the existing building at a location that had difficult access for the Main Contractor.  
 
As the school’s existing heating system was at full capacity a new local condensing combination boiler was installed to serve the underfloor heating. Domestic hot water was extended from the new boiler to serve the extension together with existing toilets and kitchenette which allowed an electric water heater to be removed and the new boiler to be installed in the same location. Gas was extended from the existing gas meter through the school to the boiler.  
 
The lighting in the classroom is suspended with both uplight and downlight components and has the benefit of both absense and daylight control. The white board lighting is separately switched.  
 
A new distribution board has been installed including a new sub-main to serve local lighting and power. Additionally data wiring has been extended from the existing comms cabinet whilst fire alarm and smoke detection plus intruder alarm has been extended into the space
